Sam laid on the double bed in the motel room he was renting; as much as he tried he just couldn’t get to sleep. The cause of his insomnia was Melody, he couldn’t get Melody out of mind, he had tried to get her out of his mind, he knew Melody didn’t love him as much as he loved her and only thought of him as a friend, hearing her say it at Eugi’s after he had surprised her was what had really pushed him to take the job as head bartender at The Palms. He had hoped time away from Melody would give him the ability to try to make the feeling disappear but it seemed to make his feelings grow stronger, each day he missed Melody more and more. She was killing him at the park being so close and snuggled up to him and not showing any kind of love greater than friendship towards him.
Sam’s thoughts got interrupted as he suddenly heard a dog barking. He didn’t think anything of it at first but than Sam realized there was a scratching noise coming from his door. Sam decided to get up and check what was going on.
As Sam opened the door the barking stopped, and Sam looked down to see a dog that looked exactly like the dog Melody owned, he even wore a similar collar.
“It can’t be, could it?” Sam whispered to himself.
Sam picked up the dog and went back into his room. Sam decided to check the tags and see what the dog’s name was, and if there was an address. The dog tag said Charlie and had Melody’s address on the back.
“Charlie! So you are Melody’s dog” Sam said, and the dog licked his face and tried to hug him as if to say, “Yes, I am Melody’s dog”.
“Is Melody here?” Sam asked, to which Charlie replied to making a sighing sound and drooping his ears, which Sam took as a no.
“Suppose I better take you home” Sam decided, to which the dog reacted happily to.
Sam was about to leave when he realized he was still in his pajamas and dressing gown so decided he better change before going out.
Once he was changed Sam and Charlie hopped into Sam’s car and Sam drove them back to Melody’s house to return Charlie.
When they arrived Sam picked Charlie up and carried him back to the apartment.
“How am I going to explain this to Melody?” Sam thought to himself.
Sam knocked on the door and waited for Melody to answer. As it was late it took a few attempts to knock on the door to wake Melody up to answer it and let them in. Melody eventually answered the door and sleepily signaled for them to enter.
After Melody had woken up a bit more she decided to find out what was going on.
“How did you get Charlie?” Melody asked.
“He somehow tracked me down to where I’m staying, I don’t know how he did it though, but as soon as I realised it was him I brought him straight here” Sam explained.
“Thank-you” Melody replied, "I wonder how he got out".
“Do you fancy a drink?”
“Erm… I can’t”
“Sam, Do you hate me? You keep trying to push me away” Melody asked.
“I could never hate you” Sam replied, sympathetic.
“Than what is it? Have I done something to offend you?” Melody questioned.
“Melody please I don’t want to talk about this” Sam begged.
“Please Sam you can’t not tell, I thought we were friends” Melody pleaded.
I thought we were friends. The words hurt Sam and he decided this was the last time he’d hear those words so half yelling, half expressing his love Sam shouted out “I LOVE YOU”
Melody stared at him blankly.
“I love you OK. That’s why I’ve been so off with you, I know you only like me as a friend but it’s killing me inside, I love you so much and I can’t stand not being with you that’s why I took the job and that’s why I can’t be around you anymore” Sam explained.
“You stupid man. You very stupid man” Melody replied.
“What do you mean?” Sam asked confused.
But Melody didn’t answer his question, well not using words anyway. She leaned in a kissed him.
“You stupid man” She repeated as she stopped kissing him, “Why’d you never say anything?”
“I just always thought that you thought of me just as a friend” Sam replied, “Why didn’t you ever say anything?”
“I thought you thought of me as a friend too” Melody replied.
“You stupid woman, you very stupid woman” Sam said, using the words Melody had said to him as he pulled her into a tight embrace.
