Chapter 7: The Bells Are Ringing
Melody and Sam relaxed in the newly furnished living room, they had spent all day painting, decorating and finishing up the house and it was a very exhausting task, even Charlie needed to rest in his dog bed. Unfortunately the rest and relaxation was not to last very long a doorbell rang.
Melody got up and answered the door to see Stephanie waiting on the other side.
“Oh sorry,” Stephanie apologized when she saw Melody’s outfit, “Are you busy? I can always come back tomorrow”.
“No no it’s ok we got everything thing finished, please come in” Melody gestured for Stephanie to enter.
“I’m afraid this is for business and I’m going to need to speak to you and Sam together” Stephanie informed.
Melody got Sam and they had the meeting in the kitchen as there was more room.
“So what is this about that needs Sam here?” Melody asked.
“Well you see I’ve had some good news which is also a bit bad and it affects you and Sam. I got a call today from Antonio D’lorentis, he’s a proprietor for a park concert, and his daughter is a big fan and keeps nagging him to hire you for a concert so he wants to pay big money for you to perform to make his daughter happy, the only problem is that he wants to book the concert in a months time the day before your wedding, and the concert would be at night time and might run over midnight” Stephanie explained.
“Thank-you for coming to see me and Sam together about this matter but I’m not having that concert run late and ruin my wedding day, you tell Antonio D’lorentis thank-you but no thanks” Melody replied.
“Ok then, I only really came to tell you that, I thought it was more of a matter to talk together than over the phone so I better go, mother has me running errands for her, the house looks lovely by the way” Stephanie smiled.
She got up from her seat and left.
“Bye Melody, bye Sam” Stephanie said as she left.
“Bye Steph” Sam and Melody said in unison.
Once Stephanie had left Sam turn to Melody and asked “If I weren’t getting married, would you have done the concert?”
“Why would you ask?” Melody counter-questioned.
“I want to make sure you aren’t giving up on your dreams because of me” Sam replied.
“Erm… well I don’t know. I suppose but I love you more than any dream” Melody answered.
“Look I’m sorry I asked, it’s been a long day, lets just go to bed,” Sam suggested.
The next day Melody awoke to find that she was alone in the bed.
“SAM! WHERE ARE YOU?” She called, but there was no answer.
Melody paused from wondering where Sam was to answer the house phone.
“Hello?” Melody answered.
“Hi Mels, it’s Sam. I’m at the church, there has been an emergency and you have to get here now” Sam replied on the other side of the line.
“Ok I’ll be there as quick as I can” Melody said as she hung up the phone and rushed to get ready.
Melody wondered what could have happened, was the reverend sick? Was there a fire? Flood? Zombies? She didn’t know so she got in the car and rushed to the church.
When Melody arrived Sam was waiting outside, but he was wearing a suite, just what was going on.
Melody approached him and asked, “What’s going on?”
“Surprise! I know how much you deep down want to do the concert so I arranged to meet with the Reverend Julian this morning and he agreed to bring the wedding forward but the only problem is that his only available slot is today and that caused a bigger problem because I know how much the bride likes her sneaky snooze, but I used that time to call the guest and let everyone one know” Sam replied.
“Hold on Sam, what exactly are you saying?” Melody questioned.
“I’m saying that on the other side of the door our friends our waiting for us to get married, well if you still want to marry me that is” Sam replied.
Melody pulled Sam into a big hug.
“This is the most romantic thing you could ever do, and of course I will marry you today. I love you,” Melody cried.
“Well in that case a friend of yours is waiting in the gazebo out back for you and needs to see you before our wedding. Don’t worry I’ll be waiting inside for you” Sam instructed.
Melody headed to the gazebo and wondered who was waiting for her, she fought it could be Stephanie but the way Sam had said it made Melody think this was someone from her past.
“Sarah!” Melody exclaimed when she saw her old friend.
Sarah had been Melody’s first true friend when Melody had first moved to Bridgeport, the last time Melody saw her Sarah was going on a world tour and then the last postcard Melody received from Sarah was that she had settled down and was getting married.
“What are you doing here? I thought you got married, is your husband here?” Melody had so many more questions to ask her friend but decided to wait for a more appropriate time than a her spontaneous wedding day.
“I moved back last week, Sam was calling people from your phonebook to see if anyone could make it today and I agreed to help, as for my husband I’m afraid we got divorced”. Sarah explained.
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that, but why did you want to meet me before the wedding? You could saved this surprise meeting till the reception,” Melody asked.
“Well when agreed to come to the wedding, I asked Sam if he had remembered the wedding dress and being a man he had of course forgotten. So I brought you my dress, I had some new bits put on this morning before coming to the church, so you will defiantly have something old something new, something borrowed, something blue” Sarah replied.
Everyone was seated in the church Sarah had come in but Melody wasn’t with her, Sam began to worry but ten minutes later Melody walked through the door. Sam stared in amazement, Melody looked like an angle and he was glad fate had chosen her to be his wife.
Melody made waltzed down the aisle and held hands with Sam.
“Today we are here to honored the coming together of two of your friends, Melody Barlow and Sam Young. I believe they have written their own vows and we will now hear the vows written by Sam.” Revered Julian announced.
Sam cleared his throat he was very nervous so Melody flashed him a small smile and nod to reassure him.
“Melody.” Sam started before clearing his throat again before continuing, “Melody, I have been searching for you my whole life. Before I met you I felt like I was traveling around in the dark. And then you...a bright shining star that made me see again and brought me back to life. I have not left your side since and I can promise I never will. On this day I vow always to stay true to you and always work things out even when we fuss and fight. I will take care of you in sickness and always have your back. And Melody I will trust in you and will always know you have my best interest in your heart. A heart that is full and rich with love, generosity, and caring beyond the entire universe. You are the most beautiful person inside and out and I am the lucky one because you have already given me everything I have ever wanted... I love you.
Melody couldn’t help herself, tears were rolling down her cheeks, but she just smiled and couldn’t help herself with how happy Sam’s words made her feel.
“And now for the vows written by Melody” Reverend Julian announced.
Melody took a deep breath and this time it was Sam’s turn to reassure her.
“Sam, you are my best friend. Today I give myself to you. Using the love that we share as a vessel, to go through the pressures of the present and the uncertainties of our future, I can promise that you will always have my deepest love, my fullest devotion, and my most tender care. I promise to love you, to always strive to encourage and inspire you, to laugh with you, and to comfort you in times of sorrow and struggle. I promise to love you in good times and in bad, when life seems easy and also when times become difficult, when our love is simple, and when things becomes complicated. I promise to honor you, and to always hold our love for each other in highest regard. These things I pledge to you today, and all the days of our life together… I Love You.” Melody said, to her surprise Sam was becoming just as emotional and tears were running down his face, Melody was sure she had never seen him cry before and it made her heart melt.
“Now that Sam and Melody have both said their vows it is time for the rings” Reverend Julian announced.
Charlie took this as his time to shine. Sam had entrusted him with the rings and with a gentle nudge from Stephanie he made his way down the aisle with the rings tied to his collar.
Melody couldn’t help but giggle when she realized what Sam had done; she knelt down and collected the rings.
“Good boy” Melody told Charlie as she patted him on the head playfully.
Melody and Sam than exchanged the rings to the oohs and awws of their friends, even Charlie barked in approval.
When the rings were exchanged reverend Julian told Sam; “You may now kiss the bride”.
Neither Sam nor Melody held back and passionately kissed.
By now their friends were cheering and clapping, Melody couldn’t help but think that the day couldn’t get any better…
… But it did. Sam had decorated their patio and put out a banquet and dance floor much to Melody’s surprise. Sam, Melody and the guests all helped themselves to the food available…
…and then after eating the food their was a cake to cut…
…and then a first dance as husband and wife…
… and then partying till the early hours of the morning.
After all the festivities and the guests had left Melody found herself sitting on the grass wrapped in Sam’s arms as they watched the the last of the night stars before sunrise.
“One day you’ll shine so bright people will wonder if you’re a star that has fallen from the heavens” Sam said, “Because that’s what I thought when I first met you, and I know with your singing you’ll get there one day”
“I didn’t think there was anything left romantic for you to possible say to me” Melody smiled.
“There is one more thing I could say something that’s the most romantic thing on this earth” Sam replied.
“What’s that?” Melody asked.
“I. Love. You.” Sam replied.
“I love you too,” Melody said as she snuggled more into Sam’s arms.
As Sam held her, Melody didn’t want the day to end it had been the best day of her life.
